Which is a large phrase for something that sits at your throat. In practice it means three things: the weave is a skill and not a hobby, the women who hold it are paid as skilled workers, and nothing is woven until someone asks for it.

The signature
The Lace Choker
A slender lace of glass seed beads, worked in netting stitch and finished with a fine picot edge that traces the collarbone. Light enough to forget you are wearing it.
Six shades are shown here and two lengths. If you want a colour that isn't on this page, send me a photo of it — most of the time I can match the glass.

The weave
The stitch, the edge, the glass.
Everything here is built from a single technique. What changes between pieces is how deep the net runs and how the edge is finished — so these three are worth knowing by name.
- Netting stitch
- Beads are strung into diamonds rather than rows, so the piece has no backing and no chain — it holds its own shape and follows the neck the way cloth does.
- Picot edge
- The tiny points along the lower edge. Each one is a separate turn of the thread, added bead by bead after the net itself is finished.
- Jayco glass seed beads
- Machine-cut glass, sorted by hand before anything is strung. Consistent size is what lets a net sit flat; one bead out of gauge shows across the whole row.

The hands
This craft belongs to the women who kept it.
The weave I work in has been carried in Saurashtra for generations, mostly by women, mostly at home, mostly unpaid for what it's actually worth. I didn't invent any of it. What I do is design the pieces, source better glass, and make sure the work is paid for properly and credited plainly.
Every net that leaves here was strung by a person, in her own time, with her own hands. That is the whole product. The rest is just colour and shape.
